I was going to write about my weariness over owning three sets of plates (everyday set I bought in college, pottery from my wedding registry and my grandmother’s china), but then the husband turned on “Extreme Couponing” and I’m simply appalled by the vast amounts of food and household goods that these people are stockpiling in their homes.

How many bottles of mustard could one family possibly need? And, seriously, shelves of crackers and cereal in the bedroom? Not very relaxing.

I understand trying to save money, but I don’t get stockpiling way more items than you can possibly use. Which brings me back to plates. My goal is to one day move into a smaller place more suitable for two people. Owning three sets of plates is not suitable for two people. Really, owning three sets of plates is not suitable for most families with more than two people.

What to do? If I get the chance to downsize, at least one set of plates is going down. Maybe two. I don’t want to be tied down by things. And I certainly won’t be tied down by a bedroom filled with mustard.

The “Do One Thing” series chronicles my yearlong effort to tackle one project every day to organize my life and home.

So first there was spring break, and we took the mother-in-law to New York City for her 75th birthday. Then there was an academic conference, where I presented a paper. Then there was the week after that, which inexplicably left me off track for this project.

The house is relatively clean, but the do-one-thing-every-day streak has been broken. Anyway, there’s nothing like starting over. Tomorrow, progress.

After enjoying the flat-iron steak sandwich at the Culinard Cafe in Birmingham two times within two weeks, I knew I had to start experimenting. The combination of creamy goat cheese and whole-grain mustard was simply magical, so I decided to start with condiments.

The first sandwich I had to work with this week involved ham, however, and I couldn’t envision goat cheese complementing ham all that well (I may be wrong about that). But thanks to a trip to Trader Joe’s in Atlanta on Tuesday, I had a fresh jar of whole-grain mustard ready to go. (I don’t know what other people do on vacation, but we go to grocery stores.)

It’s like I’ve been making sandwiches wrong for YEARS. The whole-grain mustard simply transformed the ham and provolone cheese; lightly toasted on the Foreman Grill, the sandwich was melty, spicy perfection.

Never doubt the power of new and exciting condiments.

Why is Spider-Man holding a snake, you might ask?

Because the 1970s made NO SENSE, I would reply. Of all the things that we might do at the fair, my brother and I chose to sit on a bench with a guy dressed as Spider-Man holding a snake.

Also note that while I had just overcome a crippling fear of goats that came about after a tragic misreading of Three Billy Goats Gruff, I apparently had no fear of snakes AT ALL.

The problem with quinoa

The New York Times recently ran a story that confirmed something I had worried about: Bolivia’s farmers are increasingly growing quinoa for export, and surging prices have placed it out of reach for many Bolivians.

So, while I’m enjoying a cheap source of protein (around $6 a pound at the most locally), Bolivians are replacing it in their own diets with cheaper processed foods.

It’s a problem that no one seems to plan ahead for: How do you set up a crop for export without depriving locals of the same crop?

Pistachio cake doughnut from the Doughnut Plant in New York City. It seriously made me reconsider my stance against deep-frying things in my own kitchen.
